DC, not being particularly sophisticated politically, was ripe for the picking, and local elected officials welcomed them with open arms. But the elected officials wanted it to happen - - JOBS! miles from our house in Fort Totten, making our area likely the most densely served by Walmart of any other area in the US.

But then I realized that's an affliction common to most of DC's elected officials, even her opponent David Catania (e.g., his stand on ticketing parents for a child's truancy or absence from school--see " Criminalizing truancy versus creating focused programs to address truant behavior ").

More than 106,000 people are already living in the central core, a 61% increase since 2013. Having lived through that period of disorder, I am always amazed that elected officials in cities like SF, Seattle, Portland, and DC are happy with encouraging it. I don't think that's what they intended.

Sometimes they're led by the elected official for that district. Some cities like Boston , Denver and Seattle have active pro-walking groups which are a model for improving places, technical assistance, and advocacy. -- In Arlington County, WalkArlington does community walks. Salt Lake is hot in the summer. Car sharing.

It's fair to say that in NYC Mayor De Blasio cares a lot less about this than former Mayor Bloomberg (" A Playbook on the Politics of Better Streets ," Bloomberg), and in DC, most elected officials are from "the outer city" where the automobile remains dominant (" DC as a suburban agenda dominated city ," 2013).
