2023 reading list and commentary

This is the thread of the books I am reading this year. One hundred and fourteen books. I think I stubbornly finished every book I started in 2023 although some of them maybe I shouldn’t have. I did lower my “books by men” percentage an amount that felt good. I was busier, happier.

2022 reading list and commentary

I read a lot of books this year but in many ways it wasn’t a great year for me (it’s improving) so I have mixed feelings about the sheer length of this list and am hoping to read LESS this year. I started to read 144 books and finished 142 but kept up with a few I maybe shouldn’t have. average read per month: 12.

It's a very important book, about the recentralization of metropolitan areas focused on center city revival. Note that before the book, there was an article in Fortune Magazine , " Downtown is for people " ( pdf ). 21 years ago, I read Steve Belmont's Cities in Full.

The book Community Economic Development Handbook is very good on microenterprise development and the development of locally owned businesses and the differential impact on the local economy. To better leverage the value of proximity to transit , density bonuses of at least a couple stories should be a standard policy.

In 2005, I served on the advisory committee for the International Public Markets Conference which covered both DC and Baltimore that year, led a tour, etc. In 2009, I was appointed to serve on the Community Advisory Committee, representing the Eastern Market Preservation and Development Corporation. We did this in 2008 or 2009.

Rybak was elected Mayor of Minneapolis in 2001 and was re-elected again in 2005 to serve another term. He was also reelected in 2005 and again in 2009. Michael Patrick McGinn was elected the 52nd mayor of Seattle in November of 2009. His blog keeps up to dates with his dealings and policies in his city. Mayor Slay.
