Something similar has happened with the Internet and social media. Early views of social media (e.g. 2012) found that the negative aspects, such as the diffusion of unfounded rumour, were self-correcting. The result is a communication process which has been termed chronic contagion (Pomerantsev 2019).

In 2005, I served on the advisory committee for the International Public Markets Conference which covered both DC and Baltimore that year, led a tour, etc. I stepped down when we moved to Salt Lake in late 2019, although I thought at the time somehow I'd be maintaining residences in both places.
