This was in 2010, shortly after Haiti had been prostrated by a magnitude 7 earthquake. The 2010 earthquake occurred after yet another period of instability, which the United Nations Peacekeeping mission (MINUSTAH) had striven to bring to an end. Four such events have occurred since the country attained independence from France in 1804.
