December top 5 for under 5 – 2020

We invite you to check out this month’s PPL Youth Services recommendations for activities, resources, and new books in the library collection for children ages birth to five years old and their families.

The Gift of Books 2020: Picture Books and Early Readers

There isn’t a more perfect gift for a young child (or anyone!) than a book. Be sure to check out our list of recommended picture books and early readers published in 2020 that are available for checkout from the library and would also each make a special gift toward building a child’s home library.

The Snowy Day StoryWalk

The library invites you to explore a StoryWalk featuring the classic picture book, The Snowy Day by Ezra Jack Keats. With prompts for early literacy activities to further engage your child, this fun and active way to read a book together outside may be found in the windows on the first floor of the library facing Witherspoon Street. You can also read the book with us during our special edition of Super Saturday Storytime Shorts that premiered on YouTube last month, which includes songs, a craft, and a list of related books, activities, and resources. And don’t forget to visit the library’s Snowy Day themed tree during the Morven Museum and Garden  Festival of Trees running through January 10.

Phonics Book Sets

Is your child beginning to sound out words as you share books together? Then check out our new phonics book sets located in the Beginning To Read collection on the third floor of the library.  Available for contactless hold pickup, each set consists of 10-12 books bound together in one “fat” book to practice phonics skills. The sets feature familiar characters such as Pete the Cat, Biscuit, DC and Marvel superheroes, Thomas the Tank Engine, Fancy Nancy, and more.

Shady Brook Farm Holiday Light Show

While many holiday traditions will look different this year, one thing remains the same in nearby Yardley, PA. Experience the magic of more than 3 million lights illuminating acres of farmland at Shady Brook Farm Holiday Light Show. Encounter whimsical displays and familiar characters as you drive through in the comfort and socially-distanced safety of your own car. The two-mile trail takes about 20 minutes to drive through if you’re taking your time to enjoy the sights (on a non-busy night). The lights will dazzle the whole family!

Joy by Yasmeen Ismail; illustrated by Jenni Desmond

This delightful picture book about a playful, toddler-like kitten captures the pure joy of life…and the comfort of caring for loved ones nearby to help when joy can sometimes tumble into other feelings that aren’t so nice. Bonus: this book will also be featured in the December 24 edition of Storytime Shorts.
